I believe that life is about being the best you can be – not with what you have, but with who you are.
Who is Nelson Mandela in my life?
To me, Nelson Mandela is the most beautiful example of someone who did exactly that. About 3 years ago I was asked to write a song about him, but how do you capture so much greatness in a lyric? I remember reading so many books about him and piling up information and facts about this remarkable man, but when it came down to writing the song I just couldn’t get myself to make it a technical exercise of almost incorporating facts and figures. I decided to simply write from the heart. The lyric is in my first language (Afrikaans), and you can read it a bit further down, but it basically comes down to the following:
All my life I’ve seen him from a distance – the tall man with the soft eyes and the big heart. I smile when I see him – just like the first time – because this world is a better place when Madiba smiles. I can hear his voice as if he’s standing next to me…I know it so well and it calms me. His words and actions are an example of the true meaning of love. When he moves on to freedom anew and at last, all angels and the African sun will carry him and then may Nelson Mandela dance, dance, dance!

Ek sien hom weer van ver af soos heel my lewe lank
Want die wêreld is ‘n beter plek as Madiba smile
Ek hoor hom asof langs my – daai stem wat ‘n hart laat rus
